I have a doubt - might seem silly,

but why is the satellite(chandrayan) after launching, being kept orbiting the earth for several times before its being launched into the Lunar orbit? why isnt it directly fired to moon orbit in a straight path.?

Because India does not have a huge rocket capable of doing this.

That is probably the best and most correct answer by Zvezdichko.

To put it differently, it is not the most 'energy/fuel efficient' way of sending a payload to the moon. Also they'd want to keep it a while in earth orbit to check the health of all systems on board, and the deep space tracking system.
